RE post of Internet Saftey :)

For the last article I read a piece written by William C. Porter called "I have a question". He is a Brigham Young University professor and this article was published in the church magazine the Ensign in March 2001. The most important thing that I learned from this article was the three steps to protect one from harmful Internet experiences. They are: parental awareness, family rules and filtering. He also said that the most effective protection is self discipline. I can use this to apply it into my own future family and current family still at home. I am going to encourage them to openly discuss family rules of the internet and have my mom learn more about the internet so she will know what my siblings are doing.
For the second part of the assignment I talked to my little brother who is fourteen years old. I informed him about the LDS website on how to avoid negative media influences. We talked most about the internet and how to protect himself while he in on the internet. We also talked about our family rules and made sure that they were clear. This was a positive experience. He is very tech savvy as well as safety internet savvy.

Practicum Project Sharing

What a wonderful experience that I had at Hillcrest Elementary School! I had the opportunity to work with the lowest guided reading group in my first grade class. Three of the four students were ELLs. During my lessons I realized that one of the students was not able to understand some of the stories because of the language barrier. So I began to informaly observe this child more often and realized that she had appropriate BICS or social vocabulary which we learned would come first with ELLs. But what she really struggled with was more the academic language CALPS. So during my mini lessons I was more careful to provide the scaffolding to help this student. We would do little lessons on the mearning and importance of words in the books that we were reading. I also tried to provide opportunities for the ELL students to collaborate with other students. I loved watching this wonderful event take place. The students were really able to help one another learn about the different stories we were reading and inturn practice both BICs and CALPs. Many of the learners in the classroom needed accomodations such as this collaboration. I felt that assessment was a key to knowing what to teach next especially with the students that were not as comfortable with the english language. Both informal and formal assessments were used to help me know where teh students were and how to readjust my teaching to better accomodate their learning styles.

In first grade it is so important to teach children about reading strategies. In the classroom I have taught multiple lessons that teach the children how to use reading strategies to help with their reading fluency and comprehension. We have read together and individually. Then to enhance their own individual learning and practice we have been able to go into the Mac computer lab four days a week for twenty minutes and the students have practiced the strategies at their own pace using the WaterFord program. In this program the students read books into the mics and listen back to themselves read. They are able to listen to their own reading and identify which strategy will be best for them to work on. This encourages self-regulation and goal making.

I love using the computer lab in my teaching. Especially in teaching children about patterns. The website www.starfall.com has great links to games that reinforce many math and reading concepts for different grade levels. I find this to be an excellent way for children to learn more about safe internet use and the core areas taught in the classroom. Also the games are fun and easy to use for the children. This would be an excellent way to provide independent practice for patterns, addition and subtraction.

I am teaching in Alpine School District at Hillcrest Elementary School in a first grade classroom. In the classroom the only computer belongs to the teacher and is a Mac. However we do have a projector in the classroom and access to smartborads and Elmos. Also the children go to computers everyday. It is a lab of 30 Macs and has great reasources for the children to learn. The computer insrtuctor provides them rich experiences that enhances their computer time expereicne. The classroom teacher also strongly supports use of teachnology such as the projector, smartboards and elmos. In order to access the other teachnologies one must schedule with the secretaries. This school is very teach savvy!

We are focusing on teaching the how different geography can effect peoples everyday lives. We are going to do this by having the students explore and investigate. This is provide an opportunity for students to truly be active learners and be involved in discovering an answer to this question. We are using GoogleEarth to help the students with their investigation. This give the students a wonderful vantage point to see the different geography in the land of Utah.

We are using the poem "Sick" by Shel Sivlerstein. We are using this as an example to have students create their own digital story this will fulfill State standard one which states: oral language students will develop language for the purpose of effectivly communicating through listening, speaking, viewing and presenting. This will introduce the project to the students and provide them with opportunity to learn oral communication and technology skills. We will be using photostory to create our digital story.
Here is the story board for our digital story. We are using the pome "Sick" by Shel Silvertein

The Tech Savvy Teacher

We have found as the students have been coming into our classroom that they are extremely interested in the world of technology. Think about how many of your students have cell phones, computers, iPods, etc. They are technologically savvy! We, as their teachers, need to keep up with them in this fast-paced world. As we plan our lessons, we need to always have technology in mind so that we truly become a tech-savvy teacher and help our students be the best in this competitive world.
In this science activity, our objective was to help our 4th grade students achieve core standard five which states: “Students will understand the physical characteristics of Utah’s wetlands, forests, and deserts.” Each student was given an outline of the shape of Utah. On this map, they were to identify and label using different colors the different physical characteristics of Utah. We discussed the different physical characteristics of each of these areas so students could distinguish between the different landforms. Students were given the opportunity in small groups to look at Utah from outer space using Google Earth on the classroom computers to aide them in shading in their Utah maps.
Google Earth is a program that can be accessed through the internet to view the world from outer space to identify different physical characteristics. As children explore the world using this technology, they are able to observe and analyze the different wetlands, forests, and deserts in Utah compared to other areas in the world. This is a good opportunity for students because they can become more proficient using the internet and also see areas of the world they may never visit. We have found this to be an effective tool in involving the student in their own learning process. Children need to have the opportunity to learn independence and this activity provides what they need to explore using their own technology skills.

OK, so I learned so much this week... all about how more efficacious the internet can be to help me be a teacher. I learned how neat RSS and Web 2.0 can be to help you waste less time and put so many different resources at your finger tips. I loved how you can have so much information organized and easily accessible to you and to your students and parents. I am excited to become more comfortable with these resources and learn how to better apply them in my future career and life.

The First Day of a new Adventure!

So, this is my first blog entry and ... I am very excited. I have decided that this is going to be focused on the happy moments in a day. There a so many and we will get to reflect on them. I am not very familiar with technology and feel that this is going to be a very important class to help me become the most effective teacher in this modern world!
